2011 Detroit Auto Show – BMW/Mini

For around $100,000, you can own a nicely equipped BMW 650i convertible.  It has room for two golf bags, can propel you to 60 mph in around five seconds, and let you enjoy the wide open air.  According to BMW, competition is the Mercedes-Benz SL and the Porsche 911 Cabriolet.

BMW also unveiled the restyled 1-Series and the 1-Series M-Coupe.  Don’t expect it to be called an M-1 as that model name was taken by BMW’s supercar of the eighties.  The 1-Series M-Coupe is a beast.  For $47,000, you get a 1-Series with M3 suspension and reduced weight.  You can’t get a sunroof and it only comes with a 6-speed manual.  Its 335 horsepower should get you to 60mph in around 4.5 seconds.  Color options are limited to black, white, and this brilliant orange.  The 1-Series M-Coupe will be produced in limited quantities and for only one model year.

BMW also announced a “World Premiere” of the updated, 1-Series Coupe and Convertible.  Essentially, this is mid-cycle refresh consisting of a ass and facelift.

Not too much with Mini on the heals of their Countryman utility vehicle.   We did however receive a demonstration of Mini Connect which is their iPod/iPhone interface that is very slick and available in all 2011 Mini models.
